Episode 132: Netflix’s ‘Wrestlers’ / Seizures and Pseudoseizures
Friday Oct 20, 2023
Friday Oct 20, 2023
Today, Asif and Ali discuss the new Netflix docuseries ‘Wrestlers’ (1:30). The guys discuss the director of the show, Greg Whiteley, and his other shows ‘Last Chance U’ and ‘Cheer’. They then discuss the main characters in the show, including former wrestler Al Snow, talk radio celebrity Matt Jones and breakout star . They discuss their thoughts on the show and how the show is really about showmanship, devotion to craft and putting everything on the line for a dream.
Then, since a character in ‘Wrestlers’ has what appears to be a seizure in one episode (mild spoiler), the guys then discuss seizures and pseudoseizures (24:40). Asif reviews the definition of seizures and epilepsy. He then goes over first aid for seizures and the dangers of brain injury with prolonged seizures (status epilepticus). In the show, the seizure appears to be precipitated by a stressful event. Asif explains that stress in and of itself does not really cause seizures, but it can be related to pseudoseizures aka non-epileptic events. These are a psychogenic type of disorder, also called conversion disorder or functional neurologic disorder. Asif talks about how these are often related to underlying stress or anxiety and how they can be related to a past history of psychological trauma. He describes how their appearance can be different from actual seizures and he also explains how a test (EEG) can help to differentiate these. Asif then goes over the treatment for this disorder.

Friday Oct 06, 2023
Friday Oct 06, 2023
Today, the guys discuss the controversy surrounding comedian Hasan Minhaj and the recent New Yorker article ‘Emotional Truths’ by Clare Malone (1:52). Ali summarizes the bombshells in the article, including the fact that several of the stories Minhaj recounts in his stand up specials were untrue. The guys then compare Hasan’s case to other famous cases including Stephen Rannazzisi, who lied about being in the Twin Towers during 911 and news anchor Brian Williams who lied about being shot down in a military helicopter. The guys then discuss how the article causes one to re-evaluate Minhaj’s stand-up specials and if they feel the controversy will jeopardize him inheriting ‘The Daily Show’ from Trevor Noah.
Then the guys discussing Narcissistic personality disorder (30:23) (N.B. there is no evidence Hasan Minhaj has this disorder). Asif talks about the Greek myth it is based on as well as the diagnostic criteria. Asif discusses how it is diagnosed and how ‘countertransference’ can be a clue to the treating therapist that a patient has NPD. Asif then talks about the treatment and tip for practitioners who are seeing a patient with NPD. Finally the guys discuss whether Donal Trump had NPD and how psychiatrists were reminded to refrain from armchair analysis of public figures in 2016.

Episode 125: Jury Duty / Artificial Sweeteners (Redux)
Friday Jul 28, 2023
Friday Jul 28, 2023
To start the episode, Ali and Asif discuss the controversy surrounding country singer Miranda Lambert chastising concertgoers for taking selfies (0:48). Then, after a brief digression on Dana Carvey’s Joe Biden impression, Asif asks Ali about the surprise hit TV show ‘Jury Duty’ (10:32). They discuss the background of the show and how it is a combination of ‘The Office’ and ‘The Joe Schmo Show’. They then discuss how the show did not make much of a splash when it first debuted, but then gained buzz via TikTok. Ali and Asif then discuss the show’s reception and their thoughts on the show. They then discuss the Emmy nominations the show has received, including James Marsden for best supporting actor…for playing himself. Then the guys RE-discuss artificial sweeteners because of a new press-release issued by the WHO on the possible carcinogenic effects of aspartame (37:45). Asif explains how it was a joint press release, highlighting findings about aspartame are released today by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Overall, Asif explains how the IARC found “limited evidence” for carcinogenicity in humans aand classified aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans. He then explains that JECFA reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg body weight (ie an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake). Asif clarifies how the agencies’ statements are "complementary" in that the two groups work differently, and have a different aim: while IARC flags a potential hazard based on even limited evidence, JECFA assesses the real-life risk.
A reminder that the pod will be taking a month off in August. Look for new episodes coming your way on Sept 8, 2023!

Friday Jul 21, 2023
Today, Asif and Ali briefly continue their conversation from the last episode about ‘pitching’ and in doing so discuss Jason Sudeikis, ‘Ted Lasso’ and what makes someone successful in comedy (0:37). Ali then describes people who have pitched unsuccessfully to him. Then, Ali asks Asif about erectile dysfunction (7:27). Asif defines the terms, and discusses its many causes and how it is often an indicator of other health issues…a so-called canary in a coalmine. Asif discusses both the psychological and medical factors which can cause erectile dysfunction.
